OverviewThe Bodyguard is the latest in a series of eighties and nineties movies to be transformed into a stage musical. Following six years of planning and tense negotiations, the West End production has opened at the Adelphi Theatre. The show is directed by Thea Sharrock and is based on Lawrence Kasdan's screenplay for the 1992 smash hit movie which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. In contrast to the film, the show is set in the present day rather than the nineties with the plot revolving around the burgeoning relationship between Rachel Marron, a tempermental music superstar and Frank Farmer, a former Secret Service agent hired to protect her after she receives death threats from a stalker. The musical will feature some of Houston's greatest hits, including I Will Always Love You, One Moment in Time and I Wanna Dance with Somebody as well as a number of additional numbers made famous by the legendary singer, who died in Los Angeles in February 2012. Michael Harrison, one of the show’s producers, and whose idea it was to go after the stage rights to the movie is keen to stress that the show is a proper book musical and not just a 'Whitney Houston tribute show'. The lead of role of Rachel Marron is played by Tony and Grammy award winning actress and R&B singer Heather Headley with London based actor, Lloyd Owen of Monarch of the Glen fame as her dashing bodyguard.
