Overview

Cameron Mackintosh's legendary production of Boublil and Schönberg's Les Misérables has become a global stage sensation, seen by more than 130 million people in 53 countries around the globe. The original London production has run continuously since October 1985 and celebrated its 30th anniversary in the West End on 8 October 2015 having played at the Barbican Arts Centre and the Palace Theatre before transferring to the Sondheim (formerly the Queen's Theatre) on 1 April 2004.

The stage musical is a multi-award winning adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1862 humanitarian classic about one man's determined survival in the face of relentless persecution and the triumph of the human spirit.

French peasant and ex-convict Jean Valjean is seeking redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister's starving son. Following an act of kindness from the local Bishop, Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew, assuming a new identity and agreeing to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette. But he is relentlessly tracked down by ruthless police inspector Javert and is eventually forced to confront his past.

Set amidst the social and political struggles of nineteenth century France, Les Miserables sweeps its audience through a tale of passion, destruction and redemption against a backdrop of a nation in the grip of revolution.
