American playwright David Hirson's critically acclaimed 1991 comedy, La Bęte, debuts in London for a strictly limited ten week season before transferring to Broadway.
Directed by the multi-award-winning Matthew Warchus and starring Joanna Lumley, Mark Rylance and David Hyde Pierce, La Bęte is hotly anticipated as this year's must-see production.
When the fickle Princess Conti decides she has grown weary of her staid royal theatre troupe, she invites loud-mouthed street clown Valere to inject some bawdy fun and mischief. Although she anticipates an exciting creative combination, the troupe's leader, Elomire, has other ideas. Elomire is a classically trained thespian and fervent lover of high-brow theatre who clashes with Valere - a gaudy comic who loves only himself. So begins a gloriously witty and wildly hilarious battle as art squares off with ego and Elomire and Valere are left fighting for survival in a rollicking literary showdown for the ages.
