Overview

Following a record-breaking sell out run at the Royal Court, Bruce Norris' outrageously funny satire, Clybourne Park, transfers to the West End for a strictly limited 12 week season.

Exploring the historic fault line between race and the housing market, this grippingly cringe-inducing but acutely observed comedy has earned the production huge critical acclaim since its UK premiere last year.

Set in 1959, the play takes place in the fictional Chicago suburb where the playwright Lorraine Hansberry situated her seminal drama of racism and property, A Raisin in the Sun. Grieving parents Russ and Bev are selling their desirable two-bed at a knock-down price, desperate to escape the memory of the suicide of their Korean war veteran son. This enables the first black family to move into the neighbourhood, creating ripples of discontent amongst the cosy white urbanite residents.

Fifty years later in 2009, Clybourne Park has become an all-black neighborhood. When white couple Lindsey and Steve try to purchase the now dilapidated property, their plans to renovate the house are met with a similar response. Have the thorny issues and resentment festering beneath the floorboards actually evolved at all half a century on?

This play is recommended for ages 14+.
