Once a charismatic scholar and an authority on TS Eliot, acid-tongued professor Ben Butley is having a monumentally bad day. So bad, he’s making sure everyone else has a worse one. His marriage has crumbled and his estranged wife has now run off with the most boring man in London. His beloved protégé and former star pupil has found a new mentor, one he is actually sleeping with, to boot. And in an unprecedented kick in the teeth, even the English department's resident failure has actually managed to secure a book deal.
Butley's trusty arsenal of withering irony, spite and gleeful trouble-making have never failed him yet. But as he greets his painful discoveries with a blistering torrent of repartee and rhetoric, might they finally prove to be the weapons of his own self-destruction?
