Overview

Adapted from Alan Bennett and Malcolm Mowbray's sharply observed 1984 film, A Private Function, Betty Blue Eyes is a hilariously eccentric new British comedy musical. Produced by the legendary Cameron Mackintosh, the cast is headed by Sarah Lancashire, Reece Shearsmith, Olivier Award Winning actor Adrian Scarborough and, of course, the wonderful animatronic pig Betty as herself.

Set in northern England in 1947, post war Austerity Britain is groaning under the burden of continued food rationing, unemployment and the coldest winter for decades. The only glimmer of hope and excitement on the horizon is the impending nuptials of Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten. But while the country's long-suffering citizens are tightening their belts, the local dignitaries are illegally rearing a pig in secret to ensure that they can celebrate the forthcoming Royal Wedding with a lavish civic banquet while everyone else in the community makes do with Spam.

Local evangelistic chiropodist Gilbert Chilvers discovers the swine by chance, and egged on by his social-climbing wife, he decides to steal Betty and capitalize on the scarcity of pork. But chaos ensues as the couple try to hide the hog from the vigilant meat inspector, Wormwold.

With an infectious score by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, Betty Blue Eyes is an endearingly irresistible treat.
