Jeremy Herrin's revival of Absent Friends, Alan Ayckbourn’s masterful 1974 study of manners, middle class discontent and social embarrassment, arrives in the West End in January.
After the sudden death of Colin's fiancée, Carol, his unhappily married friends Diana and Paul invite him round for some tea and sympathy with several other mutual acquaintances. With a wickedly funny blend of jealousy, infidelity and barely concealed loathing, it's clear that trouble, as well as tea, is brewing as the afternoon progresses. As simmering tensions start to boil over at the excruciatingly uncomfortable reunion it seems Colin isn't the one who needs help after all... and with friends like these, who needs enemies?
This deliciously black comedy boasts a strong cast including David Armand, Elizabeth Berrington, Katherine Parkinson, Steffan Rhodri, Reece Shearsmith and Kara Tointon.
