Shaftesbury Theatre

What's on at the Shaftesbury Theatre

Originally called the New Princes Theatre, the Shaftesbury Theatre was designed by architect Bertie Crewe and opened in December 1911, the last new theatre to be build on Shaftesbury Avenue. It became known as the Princes Theatre in 1914.

The theatre was sold to EMI in 1962 and was refurbished and reopened in 1963 as the Shaftesbury Theatre.

Part of the auditorium ceiling fell in on 20 July 1973, closing the production of the musical Hair. The theatre was then threatened with redevelopment, but a campaign by Equity succeded in having the theatre placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. The theatre reopened with "West Side Story" a year later.

The theatre is currently owned by the Theatre of Comedy Company.
