As it's name suggests, the New London Theatre theatre is the West End's newest theatre although there has been a tavern or a place of entertainment on the site since Elizabethan times.
The Winter Garden Theatre, the last theatre on the site, was sold to a property development company by the Rank Organisation in 1959 and was demolished in 1965.
The New London Theatre was designed and built between 1971-1972 by Paul Tvrtkovic, Sean Kenny and Michael Percival and opened in 1973. From 1977 to 1980 it was used as a television studio before reverting back to theatre use. Between May 1981 and May 2002, the theatre was home to Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats", the longest playing musical in British history.
The theatre is currently owned by Really Useful Theatres.
