The Duchess Theatre was designed by Ewen Barr and is one of the smallest proscenium arched theatres in the West End. It is built in a modern Tudor Gothic style and is unusual in that the Circle is suspended from the ceiling providing some excellent sightlines.
It opened in November 1929 and boasts the record for the shortest run in history when the audience walked out before the end of the first performance of The Intimate Revue in 1930 and subsequent shows were cancelled.
The interior decoration as it is today was introduced in 1934 under the supervision of Mary Wyndham Lewis, wife of J B Priestley.
This theatre is currently owned by Max Weitzenhoffer and Nica Burns.
