The Barbican Centre is Europe's largest multi-arts and conference venue, presenting a year-round programme of art, music, film and theatre. The centre incorporates two theatres, a concert hall, three cinemas, two art galleries, a conservatory and public library, as well as three restaurants, private function rooms, conference suites, two exhibition halls and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
Designed in the 1960s by the architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the Barbican Centre was constructed in the 1970s and was opened on 3 March 1982 by Her Majesty The Queen.
Owned, funded and managed by the Corporation of London, it was built as ’the City’s gift to the nation’ at a capital cost of £161 million, equivalent to almost £400 million today.
