Max Roberts' perfectly pitched production of Lee Hall’s new play The Pitmen Painters finally arrives in the West End following critically acclaimed seasons at the National Theatre and on Broadway. Inspired by the book from William Feaver and based on a fascinating true story, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely examination of art, class, socialism and politics.

In 1934, a group of miners from Ashington, Northumberland hired a highbrow university lecturer to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint – prolifically. Drawing inspiration from everyday life in their own community, they painted ponies hauling coal, women pumping water for washday and men showing off whippets.

Within a few years their fame began to spread; they mixed with avant-garde artists and their work was acquired by prestigious collectors. Yet every day they continued to work back-breaking shifts down the mine until life and war intervened and they faded out of the headlines.
