Overview

Following its hugely successful premiere at Bristol Old Vic in 2016, the critically acclaimed new musical The Grinning Man transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season at the Trafalgar Studios.

A magical and quirky reimagining of the classic 1869 novel L'Homme Qui Rit by Victor Hugo, Carl Grose's adaptation is an extraordinary blend of fairytale, puppetry, romantic drama and black comedy.

The Grinning Man is the tragic story of Grinpayne, an orphan hideously mutilated and scarred forever as a child who is forced to wear a scarf to disguise his facial disfigurement. Taken in by itinerant carnival worker Ursus and his pet wolf, Grinpayne is raised alongside his blind childhood companion Dea with whom he has fallen in love. Ursus makes a meagre living at the fairgrounds with puppetry and exhibiting his adopted children as a freak show. But Grinpayne longs to understand who he is and find out who is responsible for his suffering.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Tom Morris and set in a fantastical world created by designer Jon Bausor, this updated production features a sensational score by Tim Phillips and Marc Teitler and is brought to life with the visually stunning puppetry of Gyre & Gimble, the original War Horse puppeteers.

Please note this production contains sexual references and swearing and is not recommended for children under 12 years old.
