Overview

In its first collaboration with Eclipse Theatre, Theatre Royal Stratford East hosts the London premiere of award-winning playwright Janice Okoh’s The Gift, directed by Dawn Walton. Spliced between Victorian times and the present day, The Gift is a provocative and outrageously quirky comedy about imperialism, cultural appropriation and tea drinking.

Brighton, 1852. African girl Sarah has been adopted by Her Royal Highness Queen Victoria and raised alongside royalty. After mixing in the Queen's circles and perfecting tea etiquette, Sarah is due to return to Africa. On the eve of her return to Africs, will Sarah do as she’s told?

Over a century later, we meet Sarah, a well-heeled middle-class black woman who lives with her husband and child in a Cheshire village. Their inquisitive but well-meaning white neighbours unexpectedly pay them a visit, armed with gluten-free muffins and some probing questions.

This won’t be your regular tea party…

This production contains strong language and nudity and is not recommended for children under 15.
