Overview
Roy Alexander Weise directs a revival of award-winning British playwright Roy Williams’ seminal play Sucker Punch at the new Theatre Royal Stratford East.
Set in South London, 1981 against a backdrop of rising unemployment and simmering racial tensions, two black teenagers Leon and Troy find themselves in a local gym owned by small-time, pugnacious, racist Charlie Maggs. Under Charlie's tutelage, the best friends are soon forging their path into the ruthless world of professional boxing.
But while compliant conformist Leon becomes a contender, going on to win British and European title belts, troublemaker Troy is ejected from the gym by Charlie and decamps to Detroit. In the USA he quickly gains a boxing reputation and a powerful and manipulative new manager who inevitably forces him to return to the UK and fight his former friend, Leon.
This compelling play explores what life is like for a young black man in Thatcher’s Britain and asks how can you fight a system that excludes you completely and dooms you to failure?
