Overview

Michael Grandage directs a revival of his production of John Logan's award-winning play Red which originally premiered at the Donmar Warehouse in December 2009. Alfred Molina reprises his critically acclaimed performance as American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko and is joined by Alfred Enoch as his young assistant Ken.

Set in Rothko's New York studio in 1958, the drama unfolds as Rothko takes on his greatest challenge to date: designing a coordinated series of murals for the walls of the exclusive Four Seasons restaurant. But Ken's watchful presence becomes threatening as he boldly challenges Rothko's theories of art and colour, advocates pop art and a new generation of artists and questions his employer's integrity in accepting a commission from such a commercial establishment.
