Porgy and Bess Tickets
More than 80 years after its premiere, George and Ira Gershwin's classic Porgy and Bess receives its first ENO staging in a new musical production directed by James Robinson.
A bittersweet love story set in South Carolina during the Great Depression, the work features arguably one of the most powerful and moving musical scores ever written for the stage, including unforgettable classics such as Summertime, I Got Plenty o’ Nothin’, It Ain’t Necessarily So and I Loves You, Porgy. Exploring the relationships between members of a close-knit Charleston community, the story follows crippled street beggar Porgy and his attempts to rescue disreputable Bess from her dark past with her violent and possessive lover Crown. But old habits die hard, and when Crown returns, will a new life with Porgy save Bess from herself?
Drawing on the story’s Southern roots and delivered through jazz, ragtime, blues and spirituals, the production also brings together a cast of 40 vocalists and a full orchestra.
