Madama Butterfly Tickets
The rich colours and romantic exoticism of the 19th-century European image of Japan provide the ravishing backdrop for Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier's production of Madama Butterfly, Puccini's perennial favourite. This powerful opera of agony and ecstasy, love and loss was inspired by true stories from turn of the century Japan and boasts a score so sensual and passionate, that the music is only matched in intensity by Butterfly's final agony.
East clashes with West to dire effect as Cio-Cio-San, the beautiful young Geisha bride of the dashing American officer Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, finds her romantic idyll shattered when he deserts her to find a wife in America. Although she lives in hope that one day he will return, increasing isolation and his final cruel revelation plunge her into tragic despair while her faithful maid Suzuki and the American consul Sharpless can only look on, helpless.
This performance is sung in Italian with English subtitles.
