Directed by Patrick Marber, Tom Stoppard's heartbreaking and deeply personal new play Leopoldstadt returns to London's Wyndham's Theatre for a limited twelve week season in June 2021 starring Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Scarborough and Luke Thallon.
Set in 1899 in the old Jewish quarter of Leopoldstadt, this harrowing play centres on three generations of the prosperous Merz family living in the vibrant, multicultural Austrian city of Vienna where a tenth of the population were Jews. Hermann Merz, a manufacturer and baptised Jew married to Catholic Gretl, has escaped the pogroms and moved his family to a grand apartment in a fashionable part of the city. Their happiness was not to last. Over six decades, this family, like millions of others, has re-discovered what it means to be Jewish in the turbulent first half of the 20th century having endured war, revolution, impoverishment, annexation by Nazi Germany and the Holocaust.
