Overview

Cal McCrystal directs a new production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera Iolanthe, starring outstanding young mezzo-soprano and ENO Harewood Artist Samantha Price in the title role alongside ENO favourites Andrew Shore and Yvonne Howard.

One of the sharpest and most cutting of the Savoy operas, this whimsical and fantastical story of Parliament, where peers and fairies are locked in legislative combat, gave Gilbert a perfect canvas on which to draw his topsy turvy world and allowed Sullivan to write some of his sublime music. The satire not only targets peers of the realm, but also offers thinly veiled portraits of Queen Victoria, John Brown, Lord Randolph Churchill and William Gladstone.

Fairy lolanthe has been banished from Fairyland to a frog bog for marrying a mortal and having his son. Years later, her Arcadian shepherd son Strephon wishes to marry his true love shepherdess Phyllis, but as she is a ward of court she requires the Lord Chancellor’s permission. The Lord Chancellor and the other peers, however, want her for themselves. The peers are getting restless and the fairies are in a frenzy. Can the Fairy Queen call Parliament to order?

This production is sung in English with surtitles projected above the stage.

Please note that no children under 5 years will be admitted to the auditorium.
