Complicite's new production of Samuel Beckett's absurd one act existentialist play, Endgame, runs for 70 performances only and stars Mark Rylance, Miriam Margolyes, Tom Hickey and Simon McBurney.
The world is coming to an end. The blind, bullying Hamm and his shambling, idiotic servant Clov co-exist in a mutually dependent and fractious relationship, trapped in a bare, partially underground room along with Hamm's father and mother who live in a pair of dustbins.
Wheelchair-bound, Hamm makes Clov move him around the room, fetch him objects and look out of the window for signs of life. Outside seems dead and nothing happens. Inside, the characters pass the time mortifying each other and toying with fears and illusions of a possible change, all along sensing the inevitability of their end.
Considered by some to be Beckett's greatest work, this seminal piece of modern theatre touches on the whole of the human condition: despair and friendship, loss and love, loneliness and joy.
