Welsh lyric mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins will make her West End theatre debut alongside platinum-selling recording artist and English tenor Alfie Boe in a new semi-staged production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s iconic musical Carousel. Directed by Lonny Price, the show will play for a strictly limited run of just 41 performances.
Adapted from Ferenc Molnár's 1909 play Liliom, Carousel premiered on Broadway in 1945 and was subsequently made into a hit Hollywood film starring Shirley Jones and Gordon McRae in 1956. One of the truly great musicals, it broke the mould with its gritty and courageous look at relationships.
Set in a small New England town, Carousel charts the tragic tale of carousel barker Billy Bigelow and his doomed romance with mill worker Julie Jordan. Fifteen years after becoming tangled up in an armed robbery and committing suicide, Billy is given the opportunity to return to earth and make amends. His lonely and bitter teenaged daughter Louise is ultimately the key to his redemption.
This timeless and powerful musical features some of the most moving and celebrated songs of all time including; If I Loved You, June Is Bustin' Out All Over and You'll Never Walk Alone.
