Overview

Jamie Lloyd directs Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as she makes her West End debut this June as Nina in Anya Reiss’ dynamic new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s celebrated masterpiece The Seagull at the Harold Pinter Theatre for a strictly limited eleven week season.

Chekhov’s classic is a meditation on how the old take revenge on the young, entwining unrequited love with both comedy and cruelty. The story revolves around the romantic and artistic conflicts in the lives of aging melodramatic actress Irina Arkadina, her lover, the well-known writer Boris Trigorin, her son Konstantin and the beautiful ingenue Nina who is desparate for fame.

On a summer’s day in a makeshift theatre by a lake, would-be playwright Konstantin’s cutting-edge new play is performed. What happens during, and in the days immediately after this play's first performance changes not just the course of the summer, but the lives of everyone involved forever.

Switching effortlessly between the ridiculous and the profound, The Seagull is a surprisingly modern exploration of art and creativity, forensically examining the transcendence and destructiveness of love and loneliness.
