Overview

Olivier Award winner Lyndsey Turner directs The National Theatre’s electrifying revival of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece The Crucible as it transfers to the Gielgud theatre for a strictly limited season this June.

First staged in 1953, Miller’s play draws unflinching parallels between the Massachusetts witch hunts of the 1690s and McCarthyism in 1950s America and is a gripping parable of power and its abuse.

The Crucible is the tale of one man’s fight for his principles during the Salem witch hunt. When a group of young women are discovered engaged in what appears to be a pagan ritual, the town of Salem is quickly swept by hysteria and accusations of witchcraft. In a community paralysed by fear and religious extremism, recrimination and greed take a deadly hold and soon even the truth itself is on trial...

Please note that this production contains strong language and themes which some may find distressing. Haze is used throughout.
