Overview

Bartlett Sher’s breathtaking revival of South Pacific receives its UK premiere at London’s Barbican Centre. With a cast of 40 and a live orchestra of 25, this Tony Award-winning landmark production will run for an exclusive seven week London season before embarking on a nationwide tour.

Set at a US army base on a remote Pacific island during World War II, the classic 1949 Rogers and Hammerstein masterpiece depicts two romances both ripped apart by racial prejudice and the stark realities of war. When Nellie, a naive young Navy nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a middle-aged French plantation owner, their troubled liaison falters after she discovers that he has two mixed-raced children from his first marriage to his late Polynesian wife. The self-confessed hick finds herself caught between her passion and her provincialism. In a parallel tale, entrepreneurial islander Bloody Mary tries to secure handsome Ivy League Lieutenant Joseph Cable as a husband for her beautiful daughter, Liat. Although he falls hopelessly in love with the young Tonkinese girl, he can’t face bringing her back to the bigotry in America.

Considered one of the greatest musicals ever written, the score includes enduring favourites including Some Enchanted Evening, I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair, I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences.
