Overview

Tom Burke, Hayley Atwell and Giles Terera star in the West End premiere of Duncan Macmillan's new adaptation of Rosmersholm, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen’s gripping thriller about morality and social and political change. Directed by Ian Rickson, Rosmersholm charts the struggle between freedom and the cruelty of conscience in an age of political division.

Set during a time of political turmoil with an election looming and a country on the brink, the plot revolves around Johannes Rosmer, a highly respected former clergyman and the owner of Rosmersholm, a grand family manor house of an influential dynasty.

A year after the suicide of his wife Beata, Rosmer is living with his wife's former friend and nurse, the enigmatic and unpredictable Rebecca West. Both are haunted by guilt over Beata's death, and while Rosmer is torn between the bold idealised hope of the future and the ghosts of his past, West is drawn to Rosmer's staid and conservative outlook on life. Each is influenced by the other and, isolated by their beliefs, they reach a shocking decision.
