Overview

Golden Globe-winner Clive Owen stars alongside Lia Williams, Anna Gunn and Julian Glover in James Macdonald's new production of Tennessee Williams' masterpiece, The Night of the Iguana which runs at the Noël Coward Theatre for a strictly limited twelve week season from July.

Set in the hot and humid west coast of Mexico in 1940, The Night of the Iguana is the story of alcoholic ex-minister Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon, a man caught in a philosophical crisis. Disgraced and removed from his position in a quiet Texas community after an affair with an underage girl, he takes a job in Puerto Vallarta as a tour guide.

His latest tour group is a bus load of pious Baptist school teachers accompanied by Charlotte, a manipulative young teenager who seduces Shannon. After his transgression is discovered and his job is under threat, Shannon hijacks the bus and takes the ladies to a remote and dilapidated hotel perched high on the mountain, run by grieving widow Maxine Faulk.

Also staying at the hotel is Hannah, a penniless painter from Nantucket painfully trying to reconcile herself to loss, loneliness and the bitter struggle she faces in looking after her ailing, elderly poet grandfather Nonno.

In this sea of sexual tension heightened by a tropical rainstorm, each character struggles with their inner demons and questions of faith, freedom, desire, destiny and duty.
