Overview

Richard Jones directs Alan Cumming and Daniel Radcliffe in a new production of Samuel Beckett's absurd one act existentialist play Endgame which will be presented in a double bill with Beckett’s rarely seen short play Rough for Theatre II.

The world is coming to an end and nothing stirs outside. The blind, bullying Hamm and his shambling, idiotic servant Clov co-exist in a mutually dependent and fractious relationship, trapped in a bare, partially underground room along with Hamm's ancient mother and father who live in a pair of dustbins.

Wheelchair-bound, Hamm makes Clov move him around the room, fetch him objects and look out of the window for signs of life. Outside seems dead and nothing happens. Inside, the characters pass the time with nostalgic musings, embarrassing each other and toying with fears and illusions of a possible change, all along sensing the inevitability of their end.

Considered by some to be Beckett's greatest work, this seminal piece of modern theatre touches on the whole of the human condition: despair and friendship, loss and love, loneliness, hope and joy.
