Overview

Phelim McDermott's Olivier Award-winning production of Akhnaten returns to ENO following sold out seasons in 2016 and 2019.

Akhnaten is the final part of American composer Philip Glass's biographical trilogy of operas in which he examines revolutionary figures from the fields of science, politics and religion. This absorbing work uses texts drawn from ancient hymns, prayers, letters and inscriptions sung in their original Egyptian, Hebrew and Akkadian.

This mesmerising opera explores the life and religious convictions of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten (Amenhotep IV). Husband to Nefertiti, divine ruler of Eighteenth dynasty Egypt, Akhnaten founds a daring new religion, abandoning traditional Egyptian polytheism and decreeing that the sun god Aten rules supreme and the old gods must be banished from their temples.

But his new ideas are not popular and his people turn upon their Pharaoh as a traitor. Akhnaten must die but will his new faith live on?

Please note that this production contains some full frontal nudity and is not suitable for young audiences.
