Overview

Shelagh Delaney’s groundbreaking play A Taste of Honey returns to the West End for the first time in 60 years in Bijan Sheibani's bold new revival which runs at the Trafalgar Studios for a limited 12 week season from December starring Jodie Prenger. Written when she was just 19 years old, Delaney’s career defining work is a gritty depiction of working-class life in post-war Britain which was later adapted into a BAFTA award-winning film starring Dora Bryan and Rita Tushingham.

Set in a shabby flat in Salford overlooking the gasworks and the local slaughterhouse, A Taste of Honey follows the story of feisty teenager Jo who lives with her feckless and flighty mother Helen. When Helen runs off to marry a wealthy car salesman from London, schoolgirl Jo takes up with Jimmy, a charming black sailor who promises to marry her but then heads back to sea leaving her pregnant and alone.

Several months later, Jo is living alone in the same shabby flat working in a shoe shop by day and in a bar in the evenings to afford the rent. Gentle art student Geof moves in and assumes the role of surrogate parent until, misguidedly, he sends for Helen and their unconventional setup unravels.

Featuring original blues and soul influenced musical compositions by Benjamin Kwasi Burrell, this poignant and heartfelt production also includes rearranged songs from the jazz era performed live by the cast accompanied by a three-piece band.

Please note this production contains adult themes and is not recommended for children under 13.
