Kate Winslet considering West End debut?

16th March 2012

Oscar-winner Kate Winslet is rumoured to be lining up a highly anticipated stage debut playing Kyra in a revival of Skylight by David Hare. The Reading-born actress, best known for her portrayal of Rose in James Cameron’s Titanic, is tipped to star opposite fellow Brit Bill Nighy as Tom in the play.

Winslet wouldn’t be the first Oscar winning actress to take to the stage. Following in the footsteps of Nicole Kidman, Octavia Spencer and Cate Blanchett, the Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye reported that the Hollywood star has been contemplating doing the play for the past three or four months and has been attempting to clear her schedule at the end of this year and into next, in order to do it.

Skylight recounts the story of Kyra, a young teacher based in London and her relationship with former lover and wealthy entrepreneur Tom. Following the recent death of Tom’s wife, his desperate teenage son contacts Kyra and asks her to reconcile with his father. The couple give it a go but it’s not long before old habits return and they descend once again, into brutal debate and insults.
