Overview

Andrei Serban’s striking staging of Giacomo Puccini’s final opera Turandot is a dark fairytale of disguised identities, riddles, ritual executions and powerful, triumphant love presented in a bold and glorious pageant of colour and action.

In Peking, ancient China, Emperor Altoum is old and frail; before dying, he would like to see his daughter, the Princess Turandot, married and prepared to rule with her new husband. But the cold-hearted Turandot has sworn that no man shall marry her unless he can correctly answer three riddles. If he fails, he must die.

Prince Calaf,  incognito and exiled from the defeated kingdom of Tartary, falls in love with Turandot at the first glimpse of her. Captivated by Turandot’s beauty, he takes up the challenge of solving her riddles despite entreaties from his old father Timu, the slave-girl Liù, who is secretly and hopelessly in love with him, and his cynical ministers, Ping, Pang and Pong.

The ordeal is tense, but an inspired Calaf solves Turandot's riddles and wins her hand. Turandot still refuses to marry him and he declares he wants also to win her heart. He now gives her a chance to defeat him. She does not know his name: if she can discover his identity before dawn the next day, he will die at daybreak..........

The opera is sung in Italian with English surtitles.
