Overview

Over 30 years on from its premiere, Jonathan Miller’s dazzling production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic masterpiece once again returns to the London Coliseum.

Moving the action from the Japanese town of Titipu to an ever-so English grand seaside hotel in Bournemouth, Miller’s Marx Brothers-inspired song-and-dance Mikado is a popular hit with audiences of all ages. Complete with high-kicking chorus lines, sparkling wit and exuberantly glitzy 1930s set and costumes, the large cast of colourful characters ensure the action is brimful of theatrical delights as jealous Katisha's attempts to thwart the young love between Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo go hilariously awry.

Nanki-Poo cannot marry Yum-Yum because she is betrothed to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, who cannot do his duty without executing himself. Yet when the Mikado insists upon an execution, somehow no-one loses his head……

Chris Hopkins conducts a score packed with familiar tunes and memorable melodies.

Sung in English with lyrics projected above the stage.
