Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton star in Jonathan Kent’s acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim's musical masterpiece, Sweeney Todd, when it transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season following a sell out run at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
Set in the seedy streets of Victorian London, Sweeney Todd tells the tale of Benjamin Barker and is based on the grisly legend of a Fleet Street barber who seeks retribution when a malevolent judge falsely imprisons him and takes his wife and child from him. His murderous plan for revenge includes a cut-throat partnership with Mrs Lovett, an enterprising landlady who is soon producing the tastiest meat pies in London.
Combining a savage sensibility, Sondheim's characteristically brilliant wit and dark humour with elements of English music hall, the show offers a fascinating portrait of a man driven to insanity by grief and injustice.
Please note that this production is not suitable for children under the age of 12.
