Overview

Two centuries after its premiere - and now universally accepted as the composer’s comic masterpiece - Rossini’s prequel to Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro remains as tuneful, ironic and uproariously funny as ever. Set in an elegant comic-opera vision of 18th-century Seville, Jonathan Miller’s Tiepolo-inspired staging brilliantly intercuts the traditions of the Italian commedia dell’arte and the Whitehall farce.

Count Almaviva arrives in Seville to search for the mysterious woman he met in Madrid. When he learns that her name is Rosina, he also discovers that she is due to be married to her lecherous guardian Bartolo who has designs on the orphan's large dowry. Realising that Rosina is kept under lock and key, Almaviva enlists the help of the cunning local barber and arch-schemer Figaro to sneak into the home and win her hand. Cue much comic high jinx involving dropped letters, quick-thinking bribery and pretending to be a drunk soldier.

With the grumpy Bartolo standing between the two lovers, can Figaro manage to fix it for them? It's going to be a close shave.....!

American conductor Roderick Cox makes his ENO debut conducting Rossini’s sparkling score, packed full of wit and playful tunes.

This production is sung in English with surtitles projected above the stage.
