Award-winning actress Eileen Atkins stars in the UK premiere of The Female of the Species, Joanna Murray-Smith’s latest satirical play inspired by an event in April 2000 when fellow Australian Germaine Greer was held captive in her Essex home.
Prolific feminist author Margot Mason is a literary giant suffering a severe case of writer's block as deadline after deadline comes and goes on her next book. Everything, it seems, has already happened to her. But when an uninvited fan arrives unannounced at her country home brandishing handcuffs and a gun, Margot’s morning takes a rather different turn......
As her family and friends show up, Margot's world begins to spiral hilariously out of control as her visitors debate the virtues of her bestsellers, her inconsistent world view and her decidedly unmotherly touch.
Directed by Roger Michell, the cast also includes Sophie Thompson, Anna Maxwell Martin, Con O’Neill, Paul Chahidi and Sam Kelly.
