Following a charity rehearsed reading at the Comedy Theatre last December, Charles Dance and Janie Dee reunite to star in the first major revival of William Nicholson’s award-winning 1990 play, Shadowlands, which runs for a limited West End season at Wyndham’s Theatre.
Set in 1950s Oxford, Shadowlands charts the extraordinary true love story between C.S. Lewis and Joy Gresham. A leading Christian academic and author of classics including The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis remained a bachelor until his fifties when he met and married American poet and divorcee Joy Gresham, known for her outspoken views and acerbic wit.
When Joy became terminally ill with cancer, it was Lewis who cared for her. However, his encounter with love and loss led him to reconsider many of his beliefs and their astonishing story has become a testament to the unpredictable nature of love and its enduring legacy.
The cast also includes John Standing, Richard Durden and Graham Padden.
