It takes originality, vision and imagination to make it as a successful playwright in theatre, let alone the West End. In a unique initiative, Channel 4 launched a four-part series, The Play's The Thing, to search for a first time playwright.
It attracted submissions from more than 2,000 unproduced writers and a panel of judges – West End producer Sonia Friedman, literary agent Mel Kenyon and actor Neil Pearson – whittled down submissions to one winning play, On the Third Day by Kate Betts, which will be produced by Friedman.
Originally named Playing Jesus, the winning play tells the story of a lone young woman who catches the eye of a stranger in a bar. Before the night has ended they will have told each other secrets that will change their lives forever.
Kate Betts' debut stage play takes us from the depths of underground caves to the infinite reaches of the solar system and into the shattered heart of a broken family.
An outstanding cast includes Maxine Peake, Paul Hilton and Tom MacKay.
