Avenue Q, the unofficial and unauthorised Sesame Street for grown ups has finally confirmed its long awaited transfer from Broadway to the West End. The show, which combines people and puppets in ways hitherto unimagined, is to be an appropriately mischievous debut show for the newly-renamed Noël Coward theatre (formerly the Albery Theatre) when it opens on 28 June.
Avenue Q is hardly the most upmarket of New York streets, but it is home to a menagerie of extremely eccentric but essentially loveable characters brought to life by what is described as an “unholy comedic alliance of humans and puppets.” Princeton, a bright-eyed college graduate, has just moved to this neighbourhood in an effort to discover his ever-elusive purpose in life. A tiny bank balance, the distraction of a busty blonde and a variety of weird and wonderful friends and neighbours lead Princeton on a hilarious story of self-discovery. Life may suck on Avenue Q but being jobless, having sex (whether hetero, homo or porno… and that’s just the puppets) are some of the topics the characters feel the urge to sing about.

Dogs are not generally allowed inside the auditorium. A maximum of two dogs can be looked after by the theatre staff during performance times.
